North Street Case Study
North Street / Field study 001
From flight.
To field.
To the inch.
A field validation study using aerial reconstruction and ground measurements at a real residential site. Seven MipMap readings, checked against tape and laser measurements on the ground.

Measurements, in place.
A smooth 13-second orbit with tracked measurement overlays on the house, front lumber and box board, and dumpster.
01 / Measurement check
The numbers, side by side.
The field measurements are the reference. Signed differences show how far the displayed MipMap reading falls above or below that reference.
| Feature | Field reference | MipMap model | Difference | Relative difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| House front length | 40′ 2″ · Tape | 40.00 ft | −2.00 in | −0.41% |
| House width | 32′ 1″ · Tape | 32.02 ft | −0.76 in | −0.20% |
| Driveway | 24′ 6″ · Tape | 24.46 ft | −0.48 in | −0.16% |
| Dumpster length | 267 11/16″ · Laser | 22.23 ft | −0.93 in | −0.35% |
| Dumpster width | 89.5″ · Tape | 7.45 ft | −0.10 in | −0.11% |
| Lumber | 144″ · Tape | 12.18 ft | +2.16 in | +1.50% |
| Box | 96″ · Tape | 8.06 ft | +0.72 in | +0.75% |
− Shorter than the reference · + Longer than the reference. Calculated from rounded on-screen readings.
Mean absolute difference across these seven selected checks: approximately 1.02 inches.
Five features were within one inch of their field references. The front wall differed by 2.00 inches; the lumber by 2.16 inches. This is a comparison of seven features, not a site-wide accuracy certification.
02 / On the ground
Real measurements.
Recorded on site.

Match the endpoints.
The front reading was revised to 40.00 ft after the endpoints were moved to match the tape placement, just above the exposed foundation.
A laser reference.
The selected 267 11/16-in laser reading replaces the initial rounded 267-in dumpster reference.
Check the small details.
The field length is 96 in. The model reading is 8.06 ft, approximately +0.72 in.03 / Spatial context

Independent field references
Tape and laser measurements were used for comparison, not to rescale the model. Front-wall endpoint placement was corrected to match the field measurement.
Know what the comparison measures
Results use rounded on-screen US-foot readings. Unit-conversion differences are negligible at the reported precision. Full endpoint correspondence and horizontal-versus-3D distance mode remain to be verified for every feature.
A focused field check
These results describe agreement for seven selected features. They do not establish absolute geospatial accuracy, repeatability, or accuracy throughout the reconstruction.
05 / Project deliverables
What a municipality/project team receives
- Georeferenced orthophoto/site overview
- Recurring aerial progress imagery
- Annotated dimensional references
- Point-cloud or 3D model deliverables
- Gaussian-splat visualization where useful
- Organized image archive by date/location
- Comparison measurements and field-reference notes
- Stakeholder-ready PDF summary
- GIS-compatible outputs when appropriate
- Repeat capture from defined viewpoints
Deliverables are scoped according to project requirements, coordinate-control needs, and the intended use of the data.
06 / Public-sector & infrastructure applications
Documentation for project teams.
Applications include construction progress, existing-condition documentation, facility/site records, asset documentation, planning reference, visual inspections, recurring project monitoring, and stakeholder communications.
